DAY 8 - AFTERNOON

Valerie has had no treatment today.  She's had maybe 2 bites of food and a few drinks of water.  Several times throughout the day she has had dry heaves.  It's excruciating to watch - her whole body tenses and violently heaves and stays in that position while it seems that she is going to throw up, but of course, there is nothing in her to throw up.

She did the CT scan and the doctor just went over it with us.  He seemed quite encouraged by it.  He showed us where there are small metastases on her spine and he repeatedly reemphasized that they are small and treatable. He spoke encouragingly about how there are no signs of any damage to "soft tissue" - aka: organs.

So, he is going to start this afternoon/evening with a new nausea med - vontrol (don't know if it's given in the US).  The difference in this med and the zofran is that this one is for nausea and vertigo.  He said that often when people don't respond to typical nausea medication, they will respond to this one because it's more related to dizziness than gastritis.  We shall see...

He will also restart her anti-inflammatory and pain meds to keep her back pain under control (which they had been doing very well).  Then he's going to give her some fluids with glucose and electrolytes since she hasn't been able to eat.  

If that all goes well, they will restart treatment tomorrow or the following day.
